Introducing Justin Oh

Posted: Feb 11 2014

To continue our 'meet the makers' series, we had a chat with London based designer Justin Oh about his work and inspiration. Justin supplies Nook with his effortlessly simple handmade travel card holders

Tell us a bit about yourself and your design background. I was fashion trained at St. Martin's and Royal College of Art. Have worked in Paris and Tokyo, at the designer end of fashion. I hailed from the island of Penang in Malaysia, have been London based for the past 30 years.

What's the 'philosophy' behind your collection? Beauty with utility and the hint of an edge; environmentally sustainable.

Where do you find inspiration? On the streets, exhibitions, ancient cities/cultures

Where are your products made? Everything is made in my humble workshop in Holborn, Central London!

What is your Studio like? My workshop has a lot of natural light which I need in copious quantity, a small window with ivy creeping round it. It's like a galley, with work benches on three sides and a clothes rail for the clothing range and private commissions I take on. I like to keep my studio looking like a shop despite the clutter of equipment and general detritus; it helps me visualise the end process of my products and designs.

Describe a typical day in the life of you. As a one man band, there is no set routine but there's always plenty to do!

Thanks Justin!
