We are delighted to have started stocking products from 'by...' who design and make all their products in London. We had a chat with designer, David Weatherhead to find out more about 'by...' and what it's all about:
Tell us a bit about yourself and your design background I’m a designer and co-founder of by. I grew up in Wales and moved to London in 2001, studying product and furniture design first at Ravensbourne College of Design and then the Royal College of Art, graduating from the Design Products course in 2007. Since I’ve designed homewares, accessories, signage, exhibitions, worked on projects with The Dorchester Collection, Seletti and Teroforma, and exhibited in London, Milan and Paris. In 2013 by was founded.
What's the 'philosophy' behind the collection? Simple, playful, useful.
Where do you find inspiration? Life, the everyday (I take a lot of photos) travel, Art Brut!
Where are your products made? All by products are made in England, mostly in London, mostly between Tottenham High Road and the Hackney Road.
What is your studio like? A desk, a computer, a cutting mat, until recently it was also a warehouse… the bus and coffee shop are also important.
Describe a typical day in the life of you... At the moment there isn’t a typical day. In the run up to Christmas we launched by, designed the products, the website, organised production, sales, delivery, markets. Today has been spreadsheets and emails, tomorrow a visit to the warehouse will be combined with a visit to the photographers gallery…
The collection is for purchase in store, and the Desk Clock, Letter Rack and Wall Clocks are also now available online.
